After several long days of early starts, field surveys and evening activities, day six gave us a welcome opportunity to slow down and visit the waterfalls of Krka National Park.

The waterfalls were beautiful, with clear turquoise water flowing through a landscape of lush vegetation, rocky channels and woodland. It was a striking contrast to some of the hotter and drier habitats we had surveyed during the previous days.

Time to Pause

Although this was not a formal survey day, it remained an opportunity to appreciate the wider landscape in which our fieldwork was taking place. Seeing the river and waterfalls helped place the surrounding habitats into context and demonstrated how water shapes the ecology and character of the national park.

More importantly, the visit gave us a chance to take a breath. The expedition schedule had been physically demanding, with very early mornings, long periods in the heat and several activities continuing late into the evening. Having time to rest, enjoy the scenery and reflect on everything we had experienced was extremely valuable.

Reflection

This was a quieter but equally memorable day. The waterfalls were breathtaking, and it was refreshing to experience Krka National Park without needing to concentrate on measurements, survey methods or data collection.

The visit reminded me that taking time to pause and appreciate a landscape is also an important part of fieldwork. Rest helped me recover physically, process what I had learned and prepare for the next stage of the expedition.
